Cheriyal Art is a vibrant and traditional scroll painting form that originated in Cheriyal, representing the rich cultural and storytelling heritage of Telangana. This unique art form is closely associated with traditional storytellers who used painted scrolls to narrate mythological and local tales to rural audiences. The paintings are typically created on long vertical scrolls made of khadi cloth, which is specially treated with a mixture of tamarind seed paste, rice starch, and white clay to prepare a smooth surface. The themes of Cheriyal art are deeply rooted in Indian epics like the Ramayana and Mahabharata, along with regional folklore, social customs, and occupational stories of different communities. The style is characterized by bold outlines, flat figures, and the prominent use of bright colors, especially red, which forms the background of most paintings. The human figures are depicted with large expressive eyes and simple yet lively forms, making the scenes visually engaging and easy to interpret. Traditionally, each scroll was divided into panels, with each panel narrating a specific part of a story, allowing performers to unfold the scroll gradually as they narrated. This art form was not merely decorative but served as an important medium of education and entertainment in rural society. The craft is hereditary, passed down through generations of skilled artisan families who have preserved its techniques and identity over centuries. Despite the decline of traditional storytelling practices, Cheriyal art has adapted to modern tastes by being produced in smaller formats such as paintings, masks, and decorative items. Recognized for its cultural significance, Cheriyal art received the Geographical Indication (GI) tag in 2007 with GI number 69, highlighting its authenticity and regional identity. Today, it stands as a symbol of Telangana’s artistic legacy and continues to gain appreciation both nationally and internationally. Historically, this art form dates back to the 16th–17th century, flourishing during the medieval period as part of India’s rich tradition of visual storytelling.
