The Cheriyal Bonalu Pothuraju Painting comes from Cheriyal Art. It is a vibrant traditional scroll painting style rooted in Telangana’s rich storytelling heritage.
This folk art was closely linked with traditional storytellers. They used painted scrolls to narrate mythological and local tales to rural audiences.
These paintings were usually made on long vertical scrolls crafted from khadi cloth. The cloth was prepared with tamarind seed paste, rice starch, and white clay.
The smooth treated surface helped artists create vivid scenes. These were drawn from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, regional folklore, and community life.
Cheriyal art is known for bold outlines, flat figures, and bright colors. Red backgrounds make every scene striking and easy to notice.
Its human figures feature large expressive eyes and simple lively forms. This gives each composition a clear, engaging, and easy-to-follow visual style.
Traditionally, each scroll was divided into panels. Every panel showed one part of a story as performers unfolded the scroll while narrating.
More than decoration, this art served as an important medium of education and entertainment. It was especially significant in the cultural life of rural Telangana.
The craft has been passed down through generations of artisan families. They have carefully preserved its methods, themes, and identity over centuries.
Though traditional storytelling declined over time, Cheriyal art adapted well. It is now created in smaller formats like paintings, masks, and décor.
This handcrafted Cheriyal artwork also serves beautifully as traditional Bonalu dance decor. It brings Telangana’s festive energy, beliefs, and rural lifestyle into cultural spaces.
This Pothuraju Bonalu festival artwork stands out as expressive Cheriyal festival dance painting. It also reflects vivid Pothuraju ritual painting traditions.
Recognized for its importance, Cheriyal art received the Geographical Indication tag in 2007. GI number 69 affirms its regional authenticity.
Today, it remains a proud symbol of Telangana’s artistic legacy. It continues to gain appreciation from collectors in India and around the world.
Historically, this visual storytelling tradition dates back to the 16th–17th century. It flourished during the medieval period in India.
