This exquisite Leather Painting from Anantapur, Andhra Pradesh, is a traditional craft that beautifully blends mythology, folklore, and artistic finesse. Made on processed goat leather, the artwork is hand-painted using natural colors and vegetable dyes, with intricate perforations that create a stained-glass effect when light passes through.

Historically, these paintings were part of Tholu Bommalata (shadow puppetry) performances, where leather puppets narrated stories from the Ramayana, Mahabharata, and Puranas. Over time, artisans of Anantapur transformed this craft into standalone art pieces such as wall paintings, lamp shades, partitions, and decorative panels, keeping the ancient tradition alive in contemporary forms.

The artwork reflects vivid colors, fine detailing, and symbolic storytelling, making it a timeless piece of cultural heritage and spiritual expression. Each creation from Anantapur is not just an art object but a testimony to India’s centuries-old craftsmanship.
