Mysore Paintings history :
Painting in Karnataka has a long history, way back to the Ajantha period. Mysore style of traditional painting evolved through the times into many styles in South India including Mysore and Tanjore Styles.
Vijayanagar kings encouraged and contributed immensely to the development of art and architecture.
After the fall of Vijayanagar empire, the artists under the royal patronage migrated to Tanjor, Surpur, etc. And they formed different art forms with the influence of that place . . . . . Like Tanjor style of painting, kerala mural art . . Etc.
Mysore style of traditional paintings are known for their elegance, colours, delicate gold work and importance to minute detailing.
Temples and palaces that were painted with mythological concepts/ scenes, did not survive the war between the British and Hyder Ali/Tippu Sultan.
Most of the paintings which have survived till now belong to the period of Mummadi Krishnaraja Wodeyar III (1799-1868 AD). During his reign, music, sclpture, painting, dancing and literature flourished.
He provided the Artists(Chitrakar) new boost through his Magnus opus 'Sritattvanidhi'. This pictorial book has illustrations of gods, goddessess and mythological figures with all detailed instructions to the Chitrakars on all the aspects.
Other types of paintings that flourished were Portraits - of the Mysore rulers, their family members and important personalitys of Indian History. Murals adorned the walls of temples and palaces.
