Pichwai is a traditional style of painting that originated in the town of Nathdwara in Rajasthan, India, around the 17th century. The word “Pichwai” comes from the Sanskrit words ‘pichh’ (back) and ‘wai’ (hanging), referring to the cloth paintings that are hung behind the idol of Lord Shrinathji in temples. These intricate artworks are deeply devotional and are primarily created to depict various episodes from the life of Lord Krishna, especially in his child form as Shrinathji.

The themes of Pichwai paintings are closely tied to the Pushtimarg sect and revolve around religious festivals such as Janmashtami, Annakut, Holi, Sharad Purnima, and Raslila. They feature detailed portrayals of Krishna playing with cows, gopis, or lifting the Govardhan hill, often adorned with lush lotus motifs, peacocks, and seasonal elements. Traditional Pichwais are made on handwoven cloth using natural dyes and pigments, including gold and silver, with fine brushwork and deep symbolic meaning.

This art form is usually collaborative, involving multiple artisans who specialize in sketching, coloring, and ornamentation. Despite its sacred roots, Pichwai art has transcended temple walls and is now appreciated globally as a fine art form. It has recently received a Geographical Indication (GI) tag as Nathdwara Pichhwai Painting (GI No. 748), affirming its cultural and regional identity. With contemporary revivals underway, Pichwai continues to thrive as a living heritage of Rajasthan’s spiritual and artistic tradition.
