They originate from Kondapalli village in the Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh. These toys are handcrafted from a special softwood known locally as Tella Poniki, which grows in the nearby Kondapalli hills. The craft boasts a rich heritage spanning over 400 years, believed to have been introduced by migrant artisans from Rajasthan. These artisans brought unique wood-carving techniques with them. Each toy is crafted with meticulous skill. The process begins with carving the wood into desired shapes, followed by assembling, polishing, and painting. The artisans use vibrant natural or vegetable dyes, making each piece unique and colorful. The craftsmen, called Aryakshatriyas, have preserved this art form across generations, passing it down as a hereditary craft. Kondapalli Bommalu feature lively themes inspired by mythology, village life, animals, birds, and deities. They reflect the rich cultural heritage of Andhra Pradesh. These toys are especially popular during Sankranti and Navaratri festivals. During these times, they are prominently displayed in the traditional “Bommala Koluvu” (doll arrangement).
