Bhavani Jamakkalam: Traditional Handwoven Durries of Tamil Nadu

Bhavani Jamakkalam: The Timeless Cotton Durries of Tamil Nadu

Bhavani Jamakkalam refers to traditional thick cotton durries, blankets, and carpets woven in Bhavani town of Erode district, Tamil Nadu. Known for their durability, bold stripes, and rustic charm, these handwoven floor coverings reflect the skill and resilience of local weaving communities. Over time, Bhavani Jamakkalams have evolved from simple household essentials into fashionable lifestyle and utility products.

Bhavani Jamakkalam: durries

Historical Background of Bhavani Jamakkalam

The history of Bhavani Jamakkalam dates back to the late nineteenth century, a period when Indian weavers faced severe competition from British-made mill textiles. To survive economically, local weavers innovated by creating new products that were functional, affordable, and durable.

In Bhavani, a weaving community known as the Jangamars developed a unique type of blanket using coarse, coloured cotton yarns. This product came to be known as Jamakkalam. Its popularity grew rapidly due to its strength and utility, encouraging many weavers to shift from traditional saree weaving to Jamakkalam production.

Weaving Technique and Design Style

Bhavani Jamakkalams are woven using coarser cotton yarn threads on traditional looms. The use of thick yarn gives the fabric its signature weight and long life.

Key Design Features:

  • Horizontal stripe patterns

  • Use of multiple coloured weft yarns

  • Simple yet bold visual appeal

  • High resistance to wear and tear

Due to the coarse nature of the yarn, intricate motifs are limited, which gives Jamakkalams their distinctive minimal and rustic identity.

Types of Bhavani Jamakkalam

Two major varieties of Jamakkalams are produced in Bhavani:

1. Coarse Cotton Jamakkalam

  • Made using thick cotton threads

  • Features broad coloured bands

  • Mainly used as carpets, blankets, and floor mats

  • Designs are limited due to yarn thickness

2. Soft Jamakkalam (Artificial Silk Blend)

  • Made using softer artificial silk threads

  • Allows border designs and finer detailing

  • More flexible and visually decorative

  • Suitable for modern home décor and lifestyle use

Modern Usage and Fashion Adaptation

Today, Bhavani Jamakkalams are no longer limited to floor coverings. With changing consumer preferences, artisans have adapted the fabric into fashion and utility products, such as:

  • Backpacks and travel bags

  • Carry bags and tote bags

  • Cushion covers and home furnishings

  • Decorative rugs and throws

This diversification has helped sustain demand and attract younger customers while preserving traditional weaving knowledge.

GI Recognition

Bhavani Jamakkalam received Geographical Indication (GI) recognition in 2005–06, acknowledging its regional identity, historical value, and unique weaving tradition linked specifically to Bhavani in Tamil Nadu.
